27-jun-201 letter

Hola,
This week went great. We had lots of chances to go and teach. More than I thought that we were going to be able to get. And then had a bunch of doctor appointments as well. Yesterday we had a departing fireside for the first time and it went amazingly well. We were able to invite all of our recent converts from our entire mission and then bear testimony to the congregation of them and the missionaries that brought their investigators. It was amazing. Then they had us sing a departing song which actually turned our pretty well. Lucky for us we had a lot of choir people in our group of departing missionaries. This morning we swung by Hno. Villalobo's house to take pictures with him and in his tree-house which was really good. I'm excited that tonight we have President's dinner that is going to be great and then tomorrow I'll see you all at the airport. Yesterday we had a miracle drop into our laps as well. We were in church and nobody came that we had invited but we kept getting a phonecall from a restricted number. I got up during gospel principles class and answered when they called again and it was a lady named Teresa Arias. She had just come across a pass-a-long card that Elders Viecco and Wayman had dropped off at their house about four months ago and wanted us to stop by. We went by and had an amazing first lesson where the spirit had a chance to bear testimony so that they could all know that the message is true. They are coming to church this next week and will be baptized in a couple. I couldn't have asked for a better last day of proselyting in the area. Well I love you all. I know that my Savior lives, He is the Holy One of Israel. Through his infinite atonement we can all one day receive the forgiveness that we all seek and acheive our full potential as sons and daughters of God. I love this missionary work and am excited to continue on with it working with the missionaries back home. I love you all once again.

20-JUN-2011 Letter

Hello,

This last week has been awesome. Elder Viecco and I were able to start teaching a new family. It is a mom and a dad and they have a bunch of teenage and grown up kids. Then last night we started teaching a golden investigator that was a referral from the relief society president in the Passons Ward. We are seeing a bunch of success as is normal of the last week and a half of a transfer. I'm excited that we get to go to the temple with President tomorrow and then we have interviews and meetings most of the week. We have some pretty solid teaching appointments set up too that will be great. The Elder's Quorum president is having a BBQ at his house today that he invited us to. I'm stoked for some BBQ. It's been a loooong time. (Since I was in Cypress I think.) Well, everything is going great and I'm excited to see what the Lord will do to bless us this week. I love you all,

13-JUN-letter

Hello everyone!

Well, this week was great. We just had stake conference yesterday which was really well done. They had the mission and temple presidents speak, and they also had some reactivated people share there stories and then one missionary gave his farewell talk. It was good and really spiritually uplifting. But as for the work, Elder Viecco and I keep truckin' along. We had lots of chances to teach the members this week to get them stoked for stake conference, but none of them came. But the good thing was that most there were a lot of investigators that did come. The Luna family had gone out of town for the week so we weren't able to teach them at all. We will have a great lesson with them tonight though and we'll see how they're progressing. It was fun to see that Corbett finally got transferred out of his first area and is going to see the funs of transfers! I love you all.

Hola Todos,

This last week has been great. We had a chance to have a few choice adventures with the Elders that we live with. Also! This week we have been able to contact again the Luna familia. They are doing very good. We are meeting with them a few times a week and as soon as the daughters get out of school we will be able to teach the whole family a lot more often. We also have some other investigators that are progressing and the district is looking great. Thanks for getting everything figured out with school Mom. I am excited for this next week and the district meeting that I get to give. It's about how to begin teaching and it is basically going over how to make a good first impression and to be nice and make people love you. For some reason I have been luck with that one. I don't have very much voice inflection and hearing me give a talk is about as fun as listening to Bruce R. McConkie talk about radiator on a car. I'm still working on that, but there's only so much progress I can make I guess. We are teaching the english class to the mesa family still and they are progressing very well. I love the people here and am excited for all the time I have to be here. I love you all as well.

Hello Family!

This week we have had a great time and we have been working really hard. We had leadership trainings this last week on top of a bunch of doctor appointments so we were running all over the place and still the missionary work. Because today is memorial day and all of the libraries are closed I don't have a lot of time to write. But everything is going great. This next week should be a lot more productive without all of the meetings. It's good to hear that everyone is doing well. Congratulations to Emily and Jared on the wedding. I'm stoked to meet the new family. Love you all,

16-MAY-2011 Letter

Hello,

This week was exciting. We had a good end to the transfer and on saturday I received my last transfer call. I found out that I'll be staying here with Elder Viecco in the Rio Hondo ward and that is going to be a blast. There were a lot of changes in the mission and we are going to see a lot of success in the next transfer. This week I also got to be a taxi driver and drive people to a lot of doctor appointments all over the mission. Good thing I've been here long enough to know how to get to all these places. We are still working with a couple of families and making sure that we are getting the members involved in the work. I love you all and hope you all have a great week.

Hola Todos,
It was great to be able to talk to the family yesterday, and that makes it kind of hard to write today because I feel like I already said everything but here I go. This week we had a great week. We were finally able to get Elder Viecco in for his MRI and we will be going to the doctor tomorrow morning to figure out all of the results. On Friday we had our Multi-Zone conference and were able to go over some of the new mtc curriculum again and also to review a little about what Elder Perry talked about when he came last week. We've had some great luck finding as well. We went to go and visit one of the members of our ward this week that is less-active who we hadn't met yet and his brother was really interested in learning so we started teaching him. We also received a referral the other day from Elders Zuzunaga and Gillenwater (the elders we live with) for a family that is from Columbia. They have lot of potential and are a really great family. Then we had mother's day at church which went really well with a combined choir from the primary all the way to the high priests. Then, of course, we all got to call home which was great. We are going to have a really fast week this next week stock full of meetings and appointments so that should be a fun end to the transfer. Next week we'll be starting the first week of the next transfer. Well. That's about it. Love you all,

02-MAY-2011 Letter

Rubert Family,

This last week went fantastic. We had a visit from Elder Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve and President Clayton of the presidents of the Seventy. It was a really spiritual experience and then afterwards they taught all of the quorum presidents from all the stakes here about how a priesthood quorum should work. They talked to the missionaries about the importance of living worthy of the spirit and also talked a lot about the role of the Book of Mormon in missionary work. It was a great experience to meet one of the Lord's special witnesses and then to be instructed that way. We had a combined mission conference with the Anaheim mission which was good. There were about 300 missionaries there.

My companion and I were given a car this week so that we could still go out and work instead of being stuck in the house. We have a few doctor appointments this week to see how his knee is healing which will help us know what the next step will be. I finished, this morning actually, a study that I had been doing about studying the Doctrine and Covenants chronologically and it helped it all make a lot more sense. So today I ended with the official declarations and section 138. It really hit me the importance of making sure that you ponder the things that you study. The scriptures are there to open the door to revelation so that the Holy Ghost can come and teach you "all things that ye should do." I'm grateful for the chance I've had to be cooped up in the house recently and have plenty of pondering time. But now I'm ready to go back to work and do the most important part. Apply what I've learned. Mom, I don't know what kind of missionary experience that you want me to share with you. There are a lot of different aspects of missionary work. I've got lots of stories and if you could specify a little more I could give you one that could help with that part of your lesson.

I can't believe that Matt is graduating now! Wow! I'm getting old. I e-mailed dad last week about my bike and I don't know if he got my e-mail. It is in great condition to come home and let Matt use it when he heads out in a year. (I think with the price of gas that I'll be using it when I get home as well. ($4.36/gal)) And to answer your question, I have all of my flight plans set. You should be getting a copy of them in the mail so that you know all of the details. But if you want I can just get a copy of it and throw it in the mail for you. Right now one of the elders that we live with is going home in two weeks and he is really worrying about it. I keep telling him that just like death it's just a step so that he can keep moving upward and onward. We die to be resurrected into glory. We end our mission to go home and continue our spiritual progression. The mission sets a firm foundation for the rest of your life. I always get put around missionaries that worry a lot. I think it might be because I don't worry enough. Oh, well. Alls well that ends well.

For Mother's Day I will be calling home at around 3:30 your time. Will that work out? Let me know. I love you all. I'm stoked to hear from you soon.

Hey,

This Easter Sunday was great. We had a great Easter service here in the Rio Hondo ward. Then we came home and I got a lot of time for personal study because the medicine that the doctor gave Elder Viecco knocked him out. I'm excited because this Thursday we have a mission meeting with Elder L. Tom Perry. This week went well. I had a few chances to leave the apartment and go on splits with some of the Elders in my district. I'm making really good time on my goal of reading the entire bible again before I go home. Love you all. Happy to hear that the weather in Idaho is still unpredictable.

From Elder Moore's letter - 19-apr-2011

Elder Moore sent a lot more detailed story than I did. You can post it if you want.
"So as you can tell today is tuseday and i am emailing you. well that is because today i went to the Temple so for know my Pday has switched. anyway i went to the 5:30 seccion this morning and i am just sitting there just drinking in the peace when i here some more people walk in. so i turn around to see if it was anyone else for my zone and if i knew. well it they were not from my zone but i did how ever know who they were (well at least one of them). At first(by the way i am not telling you the persons name yet for a reason) i thought "hey that Elder looks like Elder Ruben he must be from the glendale zone". Then i looked a little closer at who it really was. And that is when Memory Kid in.
"I do know him and he knows me too!! but dose he remember me enough to know who i am?" So we go though the session and i am thinking "I wonder if he remeber me from back then?"we get to the end and we are going to go in to the celestail room and he sit next to me and he kind of looks over (To me at this point in the story Form the way he stare at me i KNOW he can't remeber where he met me). we get to the Celestial room and i sit down and he sit down in a chair across the room and i thought that i would say hi once we got in. but that changed after like 3 mintues. He came over and sat next to trun my direction and asked "Do i know you from some where? I swear that i know we met before" well i turn to him (holding back the laughs) and say "Trina is my Aunt." And is saw the light bulb go off in his head. "oh Your Brett Moore. i thought that was you but for some reason i thought that you were on the other side of the country" I told him, "no that is my sister Becca" So we talked a little longer about Our missions and how fast it had gone by and what had been said about conference and how his mission pres had said that when they get home to heed the Prophet's council. He also said that when elders would go home in the LONG Beach Mission his old mission pres. would open the white had book and read "Go to your nest area with out delay and Find you next companion quickly. The only differents from the mission is that you get to choose your next companion." We talked out side the temple a little and took a picture (trina you will have it by now) and talk of how Corbett is now the only one who is not married out of the family. He mentioned That when corbett get back, However, "That Boy has a full ride to BYU in ballroom and Is at byu He will have no problem get married." Yes Corbett I Too Agree with your Cousin that you will have no problem sweeping girls off their feet. So Can you guess who i Met at the temple i Know think i could have made it any Clear than by saying. That i Saw Elder Benjamin Rubert at the temple. Boy that was fun."

Hola Familia,

This week was spectacular. I had so much study time! My companion has been out because of his bike accident so I've had all the time in the world to think and ponder and study. It has been great. And I was also able to go on splits with Elder Stringham and go and teach a little bit back in Cerritos and then we went together and I was able to go around and break the ice with a lot of the investigators and members that I hadn't been able to meet yet. This morning my district went to the temple which is great. I have lots of fun pictures to send but I forgot my cable at the house so next week we'll see if I remember. Thank you so much for mailing me that letter so that I could get the library card. I only had pday on tuesday this week because of the temple, the next week it will be on monday again. When I was at the temple there were some missionaries from the arcadia mission there and it was fun to get to know and talk to them as well. And also Brett Moore was there which was really fun. We got to sit down and talk for a bit and see how the mission has gone. He goes home in August, so just one transfer after me. He speaks spanish pretty well and sounds like everything is going awesome for him right now. Then afterwards we went and we checked out the new L.A. Vistitors Center which is fantastic. We saw some of the exhibits and got to talk to one of the sister missionaries that was there. It was fun. Then we came back and the member bought us some breakfast burritos.
I have no idea what my ID is from idaho state, but I'll see what I can do to check it out. President gave me permission to get on the site so I'll see what I can do to let them know to call you.

11-APR-2011 Letter

Hello Everyone, This week has been fun learning a new area again. It's good to be on bike again. I've lost 37 pounds since I was in Cypress. I don't know why I let myself get fat. But I should be able to reach my goal with another 5 lbs. before I get home now that I'm on bike. How did you like General Conference? I just got a letter from Grandma Ligler and sounds like she's doing well. It's crazy that the Atlanta temple has been closed and reopened while I've been out. And are you stoked that we have a temple that is going to be built in Meridian. You can never get too many temples. During conference weekend we had a chance to take some time and think a lot about the council that the brethren gave us. And looks like, at least for all of us that are going home in the near future, that President wanted to make sure that the counsel on going home and getting married was ingrained really deep. I really enjoyed President Uchtdorf's talk during priesthood session that talked about how a lot of Latter-Day Saints are living below their privileges. The new area is great and it's a blast to have a second go at being a District Leader. I also lucked out to be in an all spanish district as well so that I can teach in spanish. I'm not going to lie, I feel a lot more comfortable teaching in Spanish than I do in English. But the new area is good so far. I haven't really gotten a full week here yet though, because we've been in the house for the last 3 days. My new companion Elder Viecco crashed hard on his bike the other day and I had to take him to the hospital. But now he has some medicine and we're going to the doctor tomorrow to get him all scanned and see what else we need to do. Well it's exciting to be in LA county again. It is a completely different world than the OC. When I finish my mission I will have a year in both counties. Fun stuff! Well I love you all and hope for the best. Ciao, Elder Rubert

28-mar-2011 and 04-apr-2011 letters

Hola Familia, This week has been great! We had an amazing weekend full of lots of spirit packed meetings. The zone had four baptisms this week which was really great. And we're all getting the people that we are teaching stoked about General Conference so that we can hopefully get a good turn out so that they can hear the prophet speak. This next week is going to be exciting. It's the last week of another transfer so that means that we'll be crazy busy with meetings and it always seems to be that this is the week where most of the transfers success ends up being. I don't really get why it works that way, but oh well. Tomorrow Elder Knight and I get to go to the temple with Lynn Vlaaschaert which will be awesome. Then on Friday we have ZLC which will be a blast. I'm excited once again to see what the Lord has in store for the coming transfer. I love you all and hope to hear from you soon. I'm going to write a letter to Brock so when it gets there can you get it to him. Ciao, Elder Rubert Hola Familia, Well this last week was really busy and amazing. We started off the week by having our zone activity which was really fun where we played FUJI ball. That was a blast and then on Friday we had ZLC and saw a huge switch up in the mission. Because we are all going home in the next 3 months, a lot of the leadership got a rotation so that there will still be some when we all leave. I got called to be a District Leader again and am getting transferred all the way across the mission to Pico Rivera. I'm going to be serving in the Rio Hondo Ward with Elder Viecco (Columbiano). I'm really excited to go and see the Whittier stake. It is the only part of the mission that I had never been too. So now I will have officially seen the entire mission. We also had General Conference which was amazing and we had a lot of the people from the ward making sure to remind us about what Elder Scott talked about making mairrage our number one priority when we get home. So this week was stocked full of meetings and other things. Next transfer is going to be a blast. I love change. I'm a little sad to be leaving Huntington Beach, and that I was only with Elder Hinton for one transfer, but hey. I will go and do. I also found out that I'm going to be on bike for the next couple of transfers which should be fun. Sounds like you all had fun on your Seattle trip and I hope you keep having fun. Love you all, Ciao, Elder Rubert

Hola Familia,

This week went great! We have been having a lot of success here in the zone and we have a bunch of baptisms for the coming weekend. A few from the singles ward and some of the other elders have one too. Elder Hinton and I right now are trying to keep up with all of the success that our zone is having. I love being able to see so many people coming unto christ though. Next week I should be able to go to the temple with Lynn and Elder Knight and see him take out his endowment. That is the completion of a missionary dream. And then next transfer Elder Knight and I should be able to go to a sealing. That will be awesome. This last sunday we had two return missionaries (one that served in El Salvador and the other in Uruguay) come back and give talks in the spanish ward. They both spoke really well and gave really good talks. The elders in the ward were talking afterward and we realized that we did learn spanish here in the states really well. We could keep up with them speaking spanish like they were serving here. Got to be thankful for the gift of tongues. I'm excited to be able to talk with Brandon and Drew when I get back and see what different accents or words they've picked up. My spanish is like a mutt with a mix of all. That's what happens in Long Beach! Well I love you all, thank you so much for the girl scout cookies and I'm excited to see what comes in the next week. Love you all,

Hola,

Everything here is going great! We just had a great week here and we had a lot of meetings too. We had the Mission Leadership Trainings and ZLC this last week and it was all really good. Right now Elder Hinton and I are doing a lot of member work to help them know how to share the gospel and effectively prepare their friends to hear the gospel message. Not much to report on this week, but hopefully we should be having some baptisms coming up soon. Love you all,

I would love it if you could send some Samoas if you have any left as well. This week has been great. Elder Hinton and I have been working really hard and getting to know our new area. I don't remember if I already told you, but we resplit the areas so we have this new portion that we are trying to get to know right now. And also if you have any room in the box. I'm completely out of blades for my razor if you could send some. I love the members here in the Bosa Chica ward. Right now, as well, we are teaching the Bishop's son to get him ready for his baptism. He is an awesome kid that is really smart and catches on really quick. Today we're going to go and teach a new family that we just got as a referral from the elders in the english ward. Oh! And I went to a baptism yesterday and found out that the missionaries that taught me in college are both going to Idaho State right now and one of them is married. Well, everything continues well. Hola Familia,

This week has been great. For transfers Elder Hinton just came here. (He is another Elder that I was with in the MTC) We have been getting to know the area, now that we had some boundary changes, and looking for where the best chance for finding people that speak spanish in Huntingon Beach. We have been blessed with running into some solid people that have been prepared to recieve the gospel. We are excited to see them start to progress and see their lives change over the coming weeks. This coming week we are going to be having a lot of success with some of the part member families that we have been working with as well. The mission is going amazing and I'm stoked to be able to work this week to see some great results! We now have 6 missionaries in the Bolsa Chica Ward which makes it fun being able to see more Elders on a regular basis. We all get along really well and that makes it easy to relax and enjoy the time that we have during our meetings in between our proselyting time. Love you all, and hope to hear from you soon.

Hola,
Sounds like everything is going great! This week Elder Harris and I ended the transfer with a bang. Next transfer I'll be staying here with Elder Hinton and we'll be getting another set of missionaries here in the ward. So that will bring us up to a total of 6. That also means that the area is getting split and I'm taking the lower half and passing off a few investigators to the new elders. I'm excited to see what is going to happen here in the new division of the area. Well, I don't have much time today because all of the libraries are closed. Love you all,

Familia Rubert,

Esta semana estuvo buenisisisisimo! We have been having so much success with the less actives here in our area. We were able to see a lot of them come to church this past week and those that weren't here are excited to come next week for the ward conference. Elder Harris and I were able to feel the spirit really strongly as we were giving our training at the Zone Conference this last week. It feels so good to know that you are serving and doing exactly what the Lord would have you do. How are you all? Happy Valentine's Day! With the last week of the transfer coming again I can't believe where the past six weeks have gone. Elder Harris and I have been super busy and we basically have the next week all full of appointments so I hope to be able to report some amazing success the next week. I love missionary work. There are going to be some fun changes that happen next transfer that will be fun to report on as well. I'm excited that my ability to understand the scriptures has skyrocketed. This morning during studies I was reading and then all of the sudden everything just started making sense and I started making a bunch of connections that I had never made before. The Spirit is key to this work and I'm very grateful for all of the habits and skills that I've been gaining on my mission that help me keep the spirit. I love you all and hope you have a great week.

Hola,

This week has been going great! Elder Harris and I were able to go to ZLC this week and now basically everything is ready for Zone Conference this week. Elder Harris and I have a good training that we'll be doing. Sounds good that Matt is all applied and ready for school. This week we had a chance to teach a bunch of members from our ward that we haven't seen out in a long time and we were able to help a few of them see why they need to come back. Right now we're working with a lot of member families trying to help get them ready for the temple. It is really interesting to see the different reactions that people have to realizing that they don't go to the temple just once, but that it should be a regular thing. We have also been looking for a lot of new families to teach now that all the holidays are over.
The new Ensign for this month is awesome and I think that it is really going to help a lot of our members really step up and be able to do more missionary work. Well, I can't think of much else to say, but I love you all, and hope that you have a great week.

31-JAN-2011 - Letter

Hola Familia,

This week was a little different than normal. I was a little out of it due to a cold that had been going around and wasn't as productive as I normally like to be. But Elder Harris and I still were able to go out and teach some really good lessons this week that helped some of our investigators out a bunch. We realized today that we are halfway through this transfer already and time is flying! This week we have ZLC, next week we have Zone Conference, and then the next week is transfers. We are working and praying really hard to be able to see someone get baptized while Elder Harris and I are still together (at the end of the transfer we will have been together for 4 1/2 months). We are working really hard right now as well, still getting the members a little more excited to help out in the work. As a mission this year we have a high baptismal goal that we will only be able to reach if we involve the members fully in the work. I love the Lord's work. This week I have been able to develop a lot more patience and dependance upon him. I was assigned to give a talk in sacrament meeting yesterday, but the entire week I'd just been coughing up a storm and having a really runny nose. Sunday morning came and I was still feeling a little down. I said a pray that I would have the strength to get up and give my talk and then we went to church. I was coughing and blowing my nose on the stand for the whole first half of the meeting, and then when it came my turn to speak I was able to stand up and speak for 20 minutes without any health problems at all. Then when I sat down it all came back. :( But I did have a big testimony builder that the Lord will help you in your moment of need. I was healthy for 20 minutes yesterday thanks to Him. I'm feeling a lot better today and hope that the whole cold thing is behing me now. I love you all,

Hola Familia,

Everything is going great here. That's awesome that Matt's looking into college. I was actually just thinking about that yesterday. I'm sure we could find a cheap place to live that's not to far from his school and then he could experience moving out. But that all depends on the jobs that we both have at that time. I'm going to try and get some money quick so that I can take some classes from Idaho State at the Boise Campus. But I don't know what I need. But that's a subject for another day.

Everything here is starting to pick up. Now that the holidays are officially all over, we are able to be able to get some consistancy to our appointments. Elder Harris and I are starting up a new program here in the stake to help the members get more excited about missionary work. It's really simple and looks like it's going to go well. We've already gotten some great reactions to it from some of the members in our ward.

Love you all,

Elder Rubert

--sorry I am behind in posting - had surgery on 18-Jan-2011 and just catching up ---- Amy

Hola Familia,

Its great to hear that everything is going great over there. I am so pumped, we were able to go to the Newport Temple this morning and we had a great time. We went with the whole district and I'll send you a picture of it next week. I love being able to go, even though it is outside of our mission. This past week Elder Harris and I have had some great opportunities to teach, and coming up tomorrow we have three days of training in Long Beach. So that will be fun to get to see the leadership of the mission. I love it, because then I get to see Elder Knight. Oh, and tell Matt, that I"m still waiting for a chance to go and use the church computers so that I can send him a picture of the big dreamcatcher that Elder Knight made me. The mission is going great and I'm happy to hear that everything continues well at home.
I love you all.

Ciao,

10-Jan-2011 Letter

Hello.

Sounds like everything is going great. I am definitely not in a position to get rid of the green car when I get home, so if Matt wants to try and fix it he's more than welcome. Tell Brother Roedellthat I need a couple of weeks to work out the rust and then I can try and play some more lacrosse. The weather here is great and we are enjoying working in short sleeves. I think I'm good on supplies unless you have an extra tape recorder that I can borrow. I'm trying to work out the kinks of my accent right now. I've got it basically down, it would just help to be able to hear myself. I found out on Friday that Elder Harris and I are going to be staying together for another transfer. I'm so excited that we are going to be staying together for another transfer. That will make two different companions that I've had for three transfers at a time. This transfer is a temple transfer and I'm excited to be able to go back to the Newport Beach Temple. It's absolutely gorgeous. I'm happy to report that everything is going awesome and Elder Harris and I have been able to see some momentum building up in some of our investigators. I Love Missionary Work!!!!!!!

Keep Being awesome,

Elder Rubert
